No treadmill? Roads do not exist to be gawked at. No weights? Use furniture. No machines? Gravity works wonders for crunches and pushups. No stair machine? Climb some real stairs, a tree, a hill - who cares, just go upward against gravity. No money for healthy food? Then you must have no money for candy, chips, and soft drinks, either, right? Excuses? I can’t hear you! Harsh? You will not see success by wishing. So get out and do it!

No one will be able to give you better advice, and treatment if necessary, than your personal physician and any medical specialists, when it comes to your body interacting with the environment through exercise. This is especially true of health conditions that might require special considerations when exercising, as might be the case with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or seizures. Listen to your doctor rather than what you might hear on television or read on the internet or are told by your friends or other people.

Common exercise injuries include twisted ankles, pulled shoulders, bruises, soreness, and sunburn. You can minimize these by starting an exercise routine slowly, and gradually increasing the time and effort spent exercising so that your muscles, tendons, joints, and even your skin has time to toughen up. It is easy to deceive oneself into thinking it is possible to handle anything, but that simply is not likely. If you are trying to go from a mostly sedentary lifestyle to a fully active lifestyle, you may need a couple of years to achieve it. You can succeed, but allow your body time to adjust to changes.

“The diets people should be on are not the diets that last a few days or months, and designed mainly for rapid weight loss. The diets people should be on are the long-term diets, designed for years or a lifetime. Many of us are fat or overweight in part because sugar is in nearly everything we eat. Sugar is put where it does not belong: in pasta sauce, peanut butter, ketchup, canned peas, salad dressing, and even coated on frozen mixed vegetables. Some restaurants sugarcoat their potato fries and other foods so that they will turn a golden-brown color when cooked in a deep fryer. The guilty parties will not even tell you they are doing this. What can we do? Contact the food makers and restaurants and tell them to stop it at once!

How about this as a label: Warning - This food product contains added sugar or other sweeteners or artificial sweeteners, which can contribute to obesity, diabetes, tooth loss, heart failure, the blahs, and other chronic and severe disorders.

Never eat foods containing artificial sweeteners, because they will stoke your desire for actual sweets such as sugars and starches. Once your desire for sweet has been stoked, it is an extremely difficult and lengthy process to turn it off - it is just a built-in part of human nature.

Methuselah’s Diet

Methuselah ate what he found on his plate,
And never, as people do now,
Did he note the amount of the calorie count.
He ate it because it was chow.

He wasn’t disturbed as at dinner he sat,
Devouring a roast or a pie,
To think it was lacking in granular fat
Or a couple of vitamins shy.

He cheerfully chewed each species of food,
     Unmindful of troubles or fears
Lest his health might be hurt by some fancy dessert,
And he lived over 900 years.

Words of E. W. Howe

The joy of feeling fit physically is reflected in a clearer and more useful mind. You may read and study forever but you come to no more important truthful conclusions than these two: 1. Take care of your body (eat and exercise properly) and your mind will improve. 2. Work hard, and be polite and fair, and your condition in the world will improve. No pills, tablets, lotions, philosophies, will do as much for you as this simple formula I have outlined. The formula is not of my invention. Every intelligent man of experience since time began has taught it as a natural fact.

by E. W. Howe

Edgar Watson ‘Ed’ Howe, also known as E. W. Howe, was born on 3 May 1853 in Treaty, Wabash County, Indiana, United States of America. He became a newspaper and magazine editor, a publisher, and a novelist. He is known for his magazine, “E. W. Howe’s Monthly.” Edgar Watson ‘Ed’ Howe passed on at 84 years of age on 3 October 1937 near Atchison, Kansas, United States of America.
