The Basic Rules For Clotheslines
- Wash the clotheslines before hanging any clothes - walk the entire length of each line while pulling a damp cloth wrapped around the lines.
- Hang the clothes in the right order, following the instinctual method implanted in your head.
- Never hang a shirt by the shoulders, always by the tail. Otherwise, what would the neighbors think?
- Wash day is Monday. Never hang clothes on the Weekend, or Sunday!
- Hang the sheets and towels on the outside lines so that you can hide your faded, raggedy work clothes in the middle, out of sight of everybody.
- Remember, even in subzero weather, clothes will ‘freeze-dry.’
- Always gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left on the lines are ‘tacky.’
- If you are efficient, line up the clothes so that each item does not need two clothes pins, but shares one of the clothes pins with the next article on the clothesline.
- Clothes must be off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.

Here’s a tip for cheapskates or folks who live in the great outdoors. You may not want to hang your wet clothes to dry on tree branches or rocks, because they could be dirty or covered with debris. Carry a long piece of string with you. Double it, or fold it in half lengthwise, and then give it a few twists lengthwise. Tie each end to something, such as a tree branch. After your clothes are soaked by rain or after hand washing your clothes in the river or a container, simply insert your clothes anywhere in your string ‘clothes line’ between the twists, which will hold your garments securely in place against breezes and gravity. Clothes pins will be completely unnecessary.

A large-mouthed plastic bottle can be a washing machine. Simply fill it with water, detergent or soap, and an article of clothing. Put the lid on tight, and shake and shake the bottle. Pour out the sudsy water, pour in some new water, recap the bottle, and shake some more. Repeat as necessary to remove suds, then remove the article of clothing, squeeze or ring out the water if desired, and hang it on a clothesline to dry.

I had an extra smile

The earliest known footwear is a pair of sandals that date back to about 7,000 B.C.E. However, anatomical analysis of early humans seems to indicate that we may have begun wearing shoes as early as 40,000 years ago. Before then, we ran around barefoot and ate rocks. What’s that . . . oh, apparently, early humans did not eat rocks . . . just wild plants, raw meat, and bugs. Aren’t you glad you wear shoes?

Mount Everest peaks at Earth’s highest-known land elevation above sea level. The mountain’s enormity was first declared in 1856 by a team assembled by India’s Surveyor General, who was also the mountain’s eponym, a British man named George Everest, who never actually saw the mountain. The official height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 meters (29,032 feet) above sea level. By other measures, Mount Everest is 8.9 kilometers (5.5 miles) high. But wait, there’s more - due to the Earth’s shifting tectonic plates, Mount Everest appears to be growing taller by an astounding 4 to 5 millimeters every year!

What are stars? Stars are massive spheres, or balls, of very hot burning gases, called plasma, held together by their own gravity. Most stars contain mostly hydrogen, with small amounts of helium. Some stars have tiny amounts of other elements as well.

Stars form in nebulas, which are large gaseous areas of space. As gravity attracts and condenses more and more gas into clusters, young stars called protostars start to form.

Stars radiate energy created from nuclear fusion, which is a process that takes place in a star’s core and involves hydrogen fusing, or burning, to make helium. Once nuclear fusion has begun in the core, a star is sufficiently fueled to spend the majority of its life as a main sequence star, or twinkly thing, in its most stable form.

When giant stars run out of fuel, they can ‘go supernova,’ or explode in a spectacular event called a supernova. Supernovas can release so large an amount energy that they can momentarily outshine entire galaxies. Supernovas also disperse into space elements including iron and carbon, which form new stars, planets, and the sustaining elements of life.

Once upon a time a supermassive star, and now a black hole named Sagittarius A* (apparently the asterisk, or ‘*’ is actually part of its name), existed at the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, in the constellation Sagittarius. Although it has a mass approximately 4.3 million times that of the Earth’s Sun, it is all but invisible, detectable only indirectly by observing its influence on the motions of the stars orbiting it, by the radio wave energy it creates, and by the glowing gasses that disappear into it or that are released by it.
 
Although their name implies something else, ‘black holes’ are not holes at all, but highly concentrated matter in relatively tiny spaces. A black hole is an area of space in which gravity’s pull is so strong that nothing can escape, not even light. Astronomers believe that black holes are formed by dense stars that collapse from the force of their own gravity.

Each galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars and there are estimated to be more than 100 billion galaxies in the Universe. The total number of stars in the Universe is mind boggling, estimated to be at least 70 sextillion and possibly as high as 300 sextillion, which is 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

When we look at the nighttime sky with our unaided eyes, every star we can see is within the Milky Way Galaxy. Most of the stars in the Milky Way lie on about the same plane, meaning that our galaxy is somewhat a flat disc 100,000 light years across. We presently have no maps or pictures showing the entire Milky Way, because our wobbly orb called the Earth is itself inside of the Milky Way. We would have to travel outside our solar system or send out a space drone to capture an all-encompassing picture.
 
Our Milky Way Galaxy is an area in space crowded with lots of stars - so many that it resembles a road of spilled milk. That is how it got its name. There are estimated to be somewhere between 200 and 400 billion stars in the Milky Way.

Stars only appear to twinkle because we see them through the Earth’s atmosphere. Stars shine in an unblinking steady state, but atmospheric disturbances called eddies, which we experience as slight breezes and winds, make stars look sparkly.
 
If you get into the bottom of a well or a tall chimney and look up, you can see stars, even in the middle of the day. We know this because we spend a lot of time hanging out at the bottom of old wells and chimneys.
 
At an average distance of just 149,597,870 kilometers (92,955,807 miles), the nearest star to Earth is a yellow dwarf star called the Sun. The next nearest star to Earth is a red dwarf star called Proxima Centauri, also known as Alpha Centauri C. It was discovered in 1915 by Scottish astronomer Robert Innes while he was working at the Union Observatory in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is about 39.9 trillion kilometers (24.79 trillion miles) or 4.25 light years away. Light from this star reaches Earth in 4.25 years. A spacecraft using the newest, fastest propulsion systems would take about 75,000 years to get there.

How To Handle Stress
- Take a moment, sometimes to do nothing, but even better, to do some simple task that can be done without much thought, such as cleaning a table top or putting away clean laundry.
- Talk to someone or make a plan for dealing with the situation, or better yet, do both if possible.
- Go for a walk. You will get away from your surroundings which have become a reminder of the situation, you will get some beneficial exercise, and you will get some relaxing mental stimulation from the sights and sounds and other sensations of the outdoors environment.
- Close your eyes for a few seconds and breath and relax your tense muscles.
- Drink a glass of water.

Did you know that stress can make you fatter? Stress can make losing weight and maintaining the right weight much harder. Why? Because when we are stressed, we instinctively eat more foods and foods high in calories in order to build up our energy, including our energy reserves that are stored as body fat, to be prepared for action. Unfortunately, these days there isn’t much action of the sort we were programmed for long ago, such as running from animals that want to eat us, or running to catch animals we want to eat. But there is good news! Laughing actually reduces stress, so get out there and do some serious laughing. Laughing allows people to live well and be healthier by handling stress better.

​Stress Management
 
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers called out ranged from 20 grams to 500 grams.
 
The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”
 
He continued, “And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”
 
“So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested.”

Bad stress is believed to make people physically sick from its resulting headaches, muscle fatigue and a lowered immune system response that can create an increased susceptibility to infections and diseases.
