How To Measure USA Hat Size. Take a flexible tape measure or a piece of string and wrap it around the head, holding it about 1/8 of an inch or 3 millimeters above the ears and just slightly above the eyebrows, which is typically the largest circumference-area of the head. Find the resulting length and divide it by an approximation of pi, with 3.14 usually being close enough. So, for example, a person whose head measures 23.25 inches around would divide 23.25 inches by 3.14, giving 7.4 (rounded to the nearest tenth of a decimal), which converts to approximately 7 and 3/8ths, which would be the person’s hat size. Some hats, however, do not have precise measurements, coming instead in sizes such as small, medium, and large, so the imprecise hats would have to tried-on for fit. Other hats have an elastic band or lining inside, which stretches to fit the wearer’s head. Baseball caps and trucker’s hats commonly have an adjustable fitting at the backs of the hats.

Hat Etiquette
- Remove hats when entering buildings as a sign of respect.
- Tip your hat to the ladies and the gentlemen.
What can you add to this list?

Why is a person who acts crazy sometimes called ‘mad as a hatter?’ Hat makers in the nineteenth-century used mercury, which is a poison, in the manufacture of hats. This poison had the effect of causing hatters who came in direct contact with the mercury or its vapors to hallucinate, shake, and do other sorts of strange and weird things. As a result, hatters during that period had the reputation of being ‘mad.’
