The following are three versions of one poem.
Time's Paces
When as a child I laughed and wept,
time crept.
When as a youth I dreamed and talked,
time walked.
When I became a full-grown man,
time ran.
When older still, I daily grew,
time flew.
Soon I shall find in traveling on,
time gone.

Time’s Paces
When I was a babe and wept and slept,
Time crept;
When I was a boy and laughed and talked,
Time walked.
Then when the years saw me a man,
Time ran.
But as I older grew,
Time flew.
Soon, as I journey on,
I’ll find time gone.
May Christ have saved my soul, by then,
Amen.

Time’s Paces
When as a child I laughed and wept,
Time crept.
When as a youth I waxed more bold,
Time strolled.
When I became a full grown man,
Time ran.
When older still I daily grew,
Time flew.
Soon I shall find, in passing on,
Time gone.
O Christ! wilt Thou have saved me then?
Amen.
by Henry Twells (1823 -1900): “Hymns and Other Stray Verses” (1901)
