The Dragonfly Story

In the bottom of an old pond lived some grubs who could not understand why none of their group ever came back after crawling up the stem of the lilies to the top of the water. They promised each other that the next one who was called to make the upward climb would return and tell what happened to him. Soon one of them felt an urgent impulse to seek the surface; he rested himself on top of a lily pad and went through a glorious transformation which made him a dragonfly with beautiful wings. In vain he tried to keep his promise. Flying back and forth over the pond, he peered down at his friends below. Then he realized that if they could ever see him they would not recognize such a radiant creature as one of their number. The fact that we cannot see our friends or communicate with them after the transformation which we call death is no proof that they cease to exist.

I came across your posting of "The Dragonfly Story" and immediately wanted to post it on my blog. I have a book by Walter Dudley Cavert that I enjoy reading religious/inspirational stories from and when looking up information on the man came across your posting. If you enjoy stories that teach us how to live better, you might want to find a copy of his book "Ours is the Faith." It's a Daily Devotional on the Christian Life, but I find it more than just religious teaching. I hope you don't mind me posting it on my blog. I believe teachings like these are meant to be shared. Thank you, Peace & Blessings!

If you like the Dragonfly story and are looking for the original book, if you search online for "Remember Now...." by Walter Dudley Cavert, you should be able to buy a used copy of his daily devotional.

The devotional was first published in 1944 and was written, along with the dragonfly parable by my grandfather, Walter Dudley Cavert.

Peace be with you,

Mark McDaniel

Hi Mark,
Someone inquired about using this poem as a permission and we noticed it's being used in a lot of places - maybe with an old permission request, or probably not at all. This is copyrighted material. Please get back with us. It is a great resource and wouldn't want to limit it, but we just need to verify you as the heir and see what we can agree to on the permission request we have pending. Thanks! Peggy Shearon

I would like to have permission to use a paraphrased version of "The Dragonfly Story" In a novel I am writing. I didn't think there could be a copyright on a story that so many people have written, but I thought I'd check anyway. Lo and behold, even though it has been reimagined and published many times, I ran across this posting. I want to use it for the enlightenment of a young woman whose father died and left her despondent for several years. This story and a few magical events pull her out of her depression so she can live a normal life. Is this where I can obtain that permission?
Thank you,
Carol Dickinson Daniell
