The Crust of Bread
I must not throw upon the floor
The crust I cannot eat;
For many little hungry ones
Would think it quite a treat.
My parents labor very hard
To get me wholesome food;
Then I must never waste a bit
That would do others good.
For willful waste makes woeful want,
And I may live to say,
Oh! how I wish I had the bread
That once I threw away!

My grandfather from Ireland used to say that when I was little. It apparently stuck.
My Irish mother would also recite the entire Crust of Bread poem to myself & sisters iif we didn’t eat all our meal.
These were among the first verses my mother taught me in my early childhood. It has guided my attitude to wasting food and eating what I took. Precious poem!
