Do Not Wait

Are there duties left undone?
Are there laurels to be won?
While the new year has begun,
     Do not wait.

Is there someone’s heart to cheer?
Have you made life’s road less drear?
You’ve a chance in this new year.
     Do not wait.

Have you left life’s pages wet?
With the tears of some regret?
You’ve a few bright pages yet.
     Do not wait.

Fill them full of life’s that true,
Scatter smiles when days look blue,
They’ll reflect more light to you.
     Do not wait.

Are your records just as bright
As you wish they were to-night?
You can make them nearer right.
     Do not wait.

I Am the New Year

Picture of colorful fireworks exploding in the night sky and words, ‘Happy New Year.’
I Am the New Year

I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page
in your book of time.

I am your next chance at the art of living.
I am your opportunity to practice what you
have learned about life during the last twelve months.

All that you sought and didn’t find is hidden in me,
waiting for you to search it out with more determination.

All the good that you tried for and didn’t achieve
is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.

All that you dreamed but didn’t dare to do,
all that you hoped but did not will,
all the faith that you claimed but did not have . . .
these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened
by the touch of a strong purpose.

I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance
to Him who said, “behold, I make all things new.”
I am the new year.

Another Fresh New Year Is Here

Another fresh new year is here . . .
     Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
     My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
     And sing more joyful songs!

by William Arthur Ward

Bring on the New Year

Bring on the new year
     Celebrations in the streets.
Bring on the new year
Make sure there’s lots of treats.

Bring on the new year
     A time to celebrate.
Memories old and wishes new
     Hopeful, the world awaits.

Recipe for a New Year

Recipe for a New Year

Take twelve whole months.
Clean them thoroughly of all bitterness,
hate, and jealousy.
Make them just as fresh and clean as possible.

Now cut each month into twenty-eight,
thirty or thirty-one different parts,
but don’t make the whole batch at once.

Prepare it one day at a time out of these ingredients.

Mix well into each day one part of faith,
one part of patience,
one part of courage,
and one part of work.

Add to each day one part of hope,
faithfulness, generosity, and meditation,
and one good deed.

Season the whole with a dash of good spirits,
a sprinkle of fun, a pinch of play,
and a cupful of good humor.

Pour all of this into a vessel of love.
Cook thoroughly over radiant joy,
garnish with a smile, and serve with quietness, unselfishness,
and cheerfulness.

You’re bound to have a Happy New Year.

Thought for a New Year

Nighttime picture of a city and the words, ‘Happy New Year.’
Thought for a New Year

Leave tarnished sorrow, disappointment, doubt,
Old worry, prejudice, defeat and fear
Heaped like a cast-off weary load outside
The shining portal of another year.

Untraveled hills and valleys gleam beyond
That wayfarers attain with mounting zest.
Who bears no useless burden from the past
Will find the miles ahead are always best.
