My Worry
A little bitty worry
Started early in the day;
By noon it seemed my worry
Hovered, standing in my way;
The things and thoughts
I should have had
Got buried in my mind,
Until my little worry turned
Into the horrid kind.
By bedtime I was frantic -
What to do, oh what to do!
And then I couldn’t go to sleep,
For worrying - fretting, too.
By morning I was almost sick,
When suddenly and soon,
My worry had been all worked out
Before the toll of noon;
Then I looked back
And saw my worry
Just for what it was -
A thing that didn’t happen,
As a worry seldom does.

Never Happens
We often distress ourselves greatly in the
apprehension of misfortune which
after all never happens at all.
We should do our best, and wait calmly the result,
We often hear of people breaking down from overwork;
but in nine cases out of ten they are really
suffering from worry or anxiety.
By John Lubbock (1834 - 1913)

Worry
Worry is a futile thing,
It’s somewhat like a rocking chair;
Although it keeps you occupied,
It doesn’t get you anywhere.

“A man ninety years old was asked to what he attributed his longevity. ‘I reckon,’ he said with a twinkle in his eye, ‘It’s because most nights I went to bed and slept when I should have sat up and worried.’” -Dorothea Kent (1916 - 1990)
Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
By Jesus of Nazareth: as quoted in “The Bible,” ‘Matthew,’ chapter 6, verses 25 through 34

“Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength - carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. “If any man or woman knows more about worrying than I do, that man or woman is sincerely to be pitied. To begin with, I come of honorable generations of worriers, all of whom seemed to be deeply sensible of their responsibility for the carrying on of a world which they did not create. My grandfather used to worry about the weather and crops. My mother worried with an elaboration and finish which really lent distinction to her performance. She could worry harder and longer on less provocation than anybody else I ever knew. When it became my turn to take up the burden of the universe I was quite as successful as she.” -Mary Boardman Page: “The Confessions of a Worrier” (1899)

Don’t shoulder the burdens of others! . . .
Each man has his own special troubles,
His worries and problems and woes;
Give aid when you can to each mortal,
But try not to feel all his blows!
For you, too, have burdens to carry;
And, if you just wear yourself out
In agony over all others,
How can you, your own troubles, rout?
-Gertrude Tooley Buckingham (1880 - 1971): “Good Advice”
“Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey!” -Barbara Hoffman
“In order to be done in a useful manner, worrying must be done quickly and then completely gotten over with. Worrying is a natural trait that helps us to figure out if there is something that needs to be done so that we can then do it, and if not, then stop worrying and get on with the daily activities and the great adventure of life!” -David Hugh Beaumont (born 1966)

If I must have an ill, may it be real,
That I may meet it eye to eye and fight,
And wheresoever it may strength reveal
Get after it with all my main and might.
The woe that but impends and wears the mind
With worry deep and most vexatious care,
Is harder fighting than the realler kind,

The other day someone sent me a “Don’t Worry Book.” Have you seen it? The book purports to be the constitution and by-laws of the “Don’t Worry Club,” which is exempt from fees, unlimited as to membership, has no badge and has absolutely no requirements except that worry is strictly forbidden . . .
Its best feature, to my mind, is its very simplicity. There are no public meetings or conventions, no wearisome harangues, no “boards,” no “secretaries” to entertain, no fellow members to buttonhole or bore you, no badge to publish you. In short, the “Don’t Worry Club” seems to be a sort of independent secret society whose members, unknown to each other, are not restricted to race or color . . .
As for myself, I am starting a “Don’t Worry Club” forthwith, and I wish to be its president - not that I crave office, but because I am seething with enthusiasm and want to push the society. If all eligible men and women were to become members, I am persuaded that the list would be a long one . . .” -Paterfamilias: ‘Don’t Worry’ published in “The Evangelical Episcopalian” (1900)
