A Wedding Blessing

May the light of friendship
     Guide your paths together.
May the laughter of children
Grace the halls of your home.
May the joy of living for one another
     Gather smiles from your lips,
     And twinkles from your eyes.

A minister was planning a wedding at the close of the Sunday morning service. After the benediction he had planned to call the couple down to be married for a brief ceremony before the congregation. For the life of him, he could not think of the names of those who were to be married. “Will those wanting to get married please come to the front?” he requested. Immediately, nine single ladies, three widows, four widowers, and six single men stepped to the front.

An acquaintance of mine whose daughter was about to be married decided to give her a diamond ring that had been in the family for several generations. The stone had never been appraised, so the father asked a gemologist friend if she would take a look at it. She agreed, but said that instead of a fee she’d accept lunch at one of Houston’s finer restaurants. A few days later, as he and the gem expert sat sipping tea, he showed her the ring. She took out her jeweler’s loupe, examined the diamond carefully and handed it back. “Wow,” said a diner who had been watching from the next table. “These Texas women are tough!”

Wedding Vows

What is a wedding vow? Vow, noun (pronounced as ‘vou’): a solemn oath. Wedding vows are the promises a couple make to each other at their marriage ceremony, or wedding.

Although in planning weddings, vows are often taken as just one part of the wedding ceremony, the wedding vows are the singular reason for the ceremony, with every other part of the ceremony being in support of the vows or in celebration of them.

Depending on religious practices, laws, traditions, or local customs, wedding vows can be read by a qualified officiant, or person who performs the ceremony. The officiant can be a member of the clergy such as a minister or priest, a ship’s captain, an official such as a judge or a justice of the peace, or possibly a notary public or government clerk. Commonly, the officiant speaks or reads aloud a statement to the groom, to which the groom replies in the affirmative, meaning some form of ‘yes,’ and then the officiant in turn speaks or reads aloud the same or similar statement to the bride, to which the bride replies in the affirmative.

Example of a Traditional Wedding Vow

Officiant: Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God, as witnesses to the joining of this man and woman in holy matrimony.

I, (name of groom/name of bride), take you, (name of bride/name of groom)
to be my (wife/husband),
to have and to hold
from this day forward;
for better, for worse,
for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health,
to love and to cherish,
till death us do part,
according to God’s holy law.
In the presence of God I make this vow.

Often the officiant will read the vows from a printed card or piece of paper, which is sometimes placed between the pages of a Bible, and the officiant will open the Bible, and holds it open and up with the printed vows over a page in the open Bible. The printed vows help the officiant remember the words to the vows as well as the names of the groom and the bride.

The officiant says or reads aloud the wedding vows, such as the ones shown above, to the groom.

The officiant in turn speaks or reads aloud the vows, such as the ones shown above, to the bride.

The officiant addresses the groom: Do you, (name of groom), take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?
Groom: I do.

The officiant addresses the bride: Do you, (name of bride), take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?
Bride: I do.

Officiant: With this ring I thee do wed.
The groom places the wedding ring on the ring finger, or fourth finger from the right, of the left hand of the bride. The wedding ring, or wedding rings in a two-ring ceremony, is an outward symbol of the marriage, a reminder of the vows, and a sign which can be seen and recognized by all.

Officiant: I now pronounce you husband and wife.

The officiant addresses the groom with the words, “You may now kiss the bride,” with the kiss sealing the marriage contract.

Wedding vows can be printed, framed, and hung on the wall of the domicile of the newly married couple. While some couples may write their own personalized wedding vows, doing so strays from accepted tradition, tends toward being a passing fad, and may not be in accord with many established religions.

“What greater thing is there for two human souls, than to feel that they are joined for life - to strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other in all pain, to be one with each other in silent unspeakable memories at the moment of the last parting?” -George Eliot (pseudonym of Mary Anne Evans, possibly also known as Marian Evans Cross (1819 - 1880)): “Adam Bede” (1859)

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet . . . I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things . . . all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying, ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Life Is to Share

Picture of a handsaw and a paintbrush.
Life Is to Share

A silver tea set, shining bright,
     Romantic in the candle light.
Appliances costly, copper and brass,
Clothes of linen, china and glass.
These are gifts, lovely and rare,
     Showered on the bridal pair.

But I would give with all wedding bands,
The joy of laboring with loving hands.
The pleasure that comes with painting a chair,
And the love that grows with the chores we share.
If I had my way, I’d make it a law,
Each bride gets a paintbrush, each groom a saw!

Katie Lee and Willie Gray

10/12/2021

Picture of a happy smiling wedding couple standing outside in a wooded area, with the bride holding a bouquet of flowers and the groom kissing the bride’s forehead.
Katie Lee and Willie Gray

Two brown heads with tossing curls,
     Red lips shutting over pearls,
Bare feet white and wet with dew,
     Two eyes black and two eyes blue;
Little boy and girl were they,
     Katie Lee and Willie Gray.

They were standing where a brook,
     Bending like a shepherd’s crook,
Flashed silver, and thick ranks
     Of green willow fringed the banks;
Half in thought and half in play,
     Katie Lee and Willie Gray.

They had cheeks like cherries red;
     He was taller ’most a head;
She, with arms like wreaths of snow,
Swung a basket to and fro,
As she loitered, half in play,
     Chattering to Willie Gray.

“Pretty Katie,” Willie said;
And there came a dash of red
Through the brownness of his cheek
“Boys are strong and girls are weak,”
And I’ll carry, so I will,
     Katie’s basket up the hill.”

Katie answered, with a laugh,
      “You shall carry only half;”
And then, tossing back her curls,
“Boys are weak as well as girls.”
Do you think that Katie guessed,
     Half the wisdom she expressed!

Men are only boys grown tall,
     Hearts don’t change much after all;
And when, long years from that day,
     Katie Lee and Willie Gray,
Stood again beside the brook,
     Bending like a shepherd’s crook.

Is it strange that Willie said
,
While again a dash of red,
Crossed the brownness of his cheek
,
      “I am strong and you are weak;
Life is but a slippery steep,
     Hung with shadows cold and deep;

“Will you trust me, Katie dear!
     Walk beside me without fear;
May I carry if I will,
All your burdens up the hill!”
And she answered with a laugh,
“No, but you may carry half.”

Close beside the little brook,
     Bending like a shepherd’s crook,
Washing with its silver hands,
Late and early at the sand,
Is a cottage, where, to day,
     Katie lives with Willie Gray.

In a porch she sits and lo!
Swings a basket to and fro,
Vastly different from the one
     That she swung in years agone;
This is long, and deep, and wide,
And has rockers at the side!

Picture of a happy, smiling older married couple outside on a bright, sunny day, seated on a wooden bench with a brick wall covered with green leafy plants behind them.
My Love

When all the flowers have faded
     and fallen fast away,
you’ll find my Love unchanging
     and constant each new day.

When all the leaves have fallen down
and left the trees so bare,
my Love will still be strong
and just for you to share.

When snow and cold have filled the air
     and wintertime is here,
my Love will always keep you warm

I'd Marry You Again

I’d Marry You Again

With tiny tears that glistened, my eyes were fixed on you.
And thinking of the life we’d share, we softly said “I do.”

Our hearts were knit together from the time that we first met,
And memories were gathered, that we never will forget.

While daily living life with you, you saw the real me,
And still you chose acceptance, a lifelong mystery.

With many happy days gone by, and others when we cried,
Some days we’d share so endlessly, while other days we’d hide.

With all the ups and downs we’ve had, in learning to be friends,
I know that in this heart of mine, I’d marry you again.

Grains of Sand: 27 Things to Say to Your Spouse

A healthy marriage is a safe haven where we can relax and recuperate from the tensions of everyday life. We need to hear positive things from our marriage partner. Just as I gathered together some friends to tell me what not to say to a spouse, they also suggested what they would like to hear from a spouse.

“Good Job!”
“You are wonderful.”
“You look gorgeous today.”
“You look handsome today.”
“I appreciate all the things you have done for me.”
“I am glad I married you.”
“If I had to do it over again, I’d still marry you.”
“I missed you today.”
“I will always love you.”
“I love to watch your eyes when you are smiling.”
“I trust you.”
“I can always count on you.”
“You make me feel good.”
“I am so proud to be married to you.”
“I am sorry.”
“I was wrong.”
“What would you like?”
“What is on your mind?”
“Let me just listen.”
“You are so special.”
“I can’t imagine my life apart from you.”
“What can I do to help?”
“I prize every moment we spend together.”
“Thank you for loving me.”
“Thank you for accepting me.”
“Thank you for being my partner.”

To My Dear and Loving Husband

If ever two were one, then surely we.
     If ever man were loved by wife, than thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.

My love is such that rivers cannot quench,

Nor aught by love from thee give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way reply;
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let’s so persevere,
That when we live no more we may live ever.

The Difference Between Romance and Love

The Difference Between Romance and Love

Romance is fleeting . . . Love is long.
Romance is dancing in the moonlight, gazing deep into desired eyes across a candlelit table . . . Love is saying: “You’re tired, honey, I’ll get up this time” - and stumbling through the darkness to comfort a crying child.
Romance is suspense, anticipation, a surprise . . . Love is dependability.
Romance is tingling excitement . . . Love is tenderness, constancy, being cherished.
Romance is eager striving to appear attractive to each other . . . Love is two people who find beauty in each other no matter how they look.
Romance is flattering attentions . . . Love is genuine thoughtfulness.
Romance feeds on itself and thus is self-consuming . . . Love is heightened and sweetened by romance, but it can survive without it.
Romance is delicious . . . Love nourishes.
Romance is seeking perfection . . . Love is forgiving faults.
Romance is flying . . . Love is safe landing.
Romance is the anguish of waiting for the phone to ring to bring you a voice that will utter endearments . . . Love is the anguish of waiting for a call that will assure you someone else is happy and safe.
Romance can’t last . . . Love can’t help it.

He: Where did you get those big eyes?
She: They came with the face.

Overheard: I was on a date recently, and the guy took me horseback riding, and that was kind of fun . . . until we ran out of quarters!

The goal of dating is to determine if the two of you can become friends first, before doing anything else. Do not rush or be rushed into anything, such as dating exclusively, kissing, or sharing too much personal information. If you cannot be friends with your partner, then a long-term relationship may not be possible, and you will want to move on and date other people. Remember that you will want to be able to boast someday to people that you married your best friend.

Francis: What did the elephant say to his girlfriend?
Frances: “I love you tons and tons!”

Julia: Did Adam and Eve ever have a date?
Jules: No, they had an apple.

Date Activities and Places
- Concert, live theater play, comedy performance, or lecture.
- Sightseeing, gallery or museum tour, or boat tour.
- Dinner and a movie.
- Religious services.
- Roller skating, bowling, walking.
- Rodeo, ballet, opera.
Can you think of other good date activities and places, and perhaps some activities and places that would not be good for dates, as for example, whale harpooning on the open seas, or coal mining?

Man: I would go to the end of the world for you.
Woman: But would you stay there?

Remember When?

Remember when nearly sixteen,
On your very first date as a teen
     At the movies? If yes,
Then I bet you can’t guess
What was shown on the cinema screen.

You have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince - at least, that is the way it happens in fairy tales!

It was an awful night - somebody was wearing the same outfit she was - her date!

What She Ate

There was a young girl who ate mice,
Tin cans, old shoes, and hair lice.
She’d go out on a date,
And she’d eat what she ate -
And never get asked somewhere twice.

Online dating has benefits and drawbacks. Many people misrepresent themselves online because it is easy to do so; they submit photographs of other people and claim it is them, and they fib about their income, employment status, criminal records, and other personal details. Some of them are fraudsters or other types of bad people. Some of the profiles on dating websites are not even of real people, but are fake profiles of nonexistent people set up to lure more visitors onto the sites.

Curly Locks, Curly Locks,
     Wilt thou be mine?
Thou shalt not wash dishes
     Nor yet feed the swine,
But sit on a cushion
     And sew a fine seam
And feed upon strawberries,
     Sugar, and cream.

Overheard: Everyone has got a Prince Charming. Mine just took a wrong turn, got lost, and is too stubborn to ask for directions.

We live in a weird world, so it is recommended that dates be in public places with other people around. A woman should always carry enough money for taxi fare home and have the telephone number of a reliable taxi company. Additionally, a woman can arrange to have a friend or relative call her at a designated time during a date, and if the telephone is not answered, then someone can go to the prearranged place of the date to check up on things. A friend or relative can also write down the license plate number of the vehicle in which a woman’s date drives when she is picked up, or better yet, she can drive her own vehicle to the date.

“My boyfriend and I met online and we’d been dating for over a year. I introduced Hans to my uncle, who was fascinated by the fact that we met over the Internet. Max: Why did the apple go out with a fig?

Hey, guys, when you are low on funds and taking your gal out on a date, just remember that every night the stars put on a show for free.

Dating can be done as a couple or more than one couple. Two couples on a date are called a double-date. More than two couples is called a group date.

“Normal people flirting: Hey, you are cute - we should go out sometime! Me trying to flirt: So do you like bread . . .” -Author Unknown

A boy was about to go on his first date, and was nervous about what to talk about. He asked his father for advice. The father replied, “My son, there are three subjects that always work. These are food, family, and philosophy.” The boy picked up his date and they went to a soda fountain. Ice cream sodas in front of them, they stared at each other for a long time, and the boy’s nervousness builds. He remembered his father’s advice, and chose the first topic. He asked the girl, “Do you like potato pancakes?” She said, “No,” and the silence returned. After a few more uncomfortable minutes, the boy thought of his father’s suggestion and turned to the second item on the list. He asked, “Do you have a brother?” Again, the girl said, “No,” and there was silence again. The boy then played his last card. He thought of his father’s advice and asked the girl the following question: “If you had a brother, would he like potato pancakes?”

She: Would you remember me in a day?
He: Yes.
She: Would you remember me in a week?
He: Certainly.
She: Would you remember me in a month?
He: No doubt about it.
She: Would you remember me in year?
He: Why, of course.
She: Knock, knock.
He: Who’s there?
She: I thought you said that you would remember me!

Forever and Always

Once upon a time,
     I became yours
and you became mine.
     And we’ll stay together
through both the tears
     and the laughter.
Because that’s what they call
     happily ever after.

“Most people get married believing a myth that marriage is a beautiful box full of all the things they have longed for: companionship, intimacy, friendship, etc. The truth is that marriage at the start is an empty box. You must put something in before you can take anything out. There is no love in marriage. Love is in people. And people put love in marriage. There is no romance in marriage. You have to infuse it into your marriage. A couple must learn the art and form the habit of giving, loving, serving, praising, keeping the box full. If you take out more than you put in, the box will be empty.” -Author Unknown

Marriage Joins Two People . . .

Marriage Joins Two People in the Circle of Its Love

Marriage is a commitment to life, the best that two people can find and bring out in each other. It offers opportunities for sharing and growth that no other relationship can equal. It is a physical and an emotional joining that is promised for a lifetime.

Within the circle of its love, marriage encompasses all of life’s most important relationships. A wife and a husband are each other’s best friend, confidant, lover, teacher, listener, and critic. And there may come times when one partner is heartbroken or ailing, and the love of the other may resemble the tender caring of a parent for a child.

Marriage deepens and enriches every facet of life. Happiness is fuller, memories are fresher, commitment is stronger, even anger is felt more strongly, and passes away more quickly.

Marriage understands and forgives the mistakes life is unable to avoid. It encourages and nurtures new life, new experiences, and new ways of expressing a love that is deeper than life.

When two people pledge their love and care for each other in marriage, they create a spirit unique unto themselves which binds them closer than any spoken or written words. Marriage is a promise, a potential made in the hearts of two people who love each other and takes a lifetime to fulfil.

Oh, Promise Me!

Oh, Promise Me!

When he was courting
     He promised me gold,
And all the furs
     My arms could hold.

The world, so he said
He would lay at my feet,
I scarcely believed
     But it’s true and complete:

I have a gold filling,
     (Third molar, I think)
And a purring old cat
     With fur soft as mink.

The world he tracks in
     All over the room,
And I sweep it out
     Ahead of my broom.

What is a Husband?

What is a Husband?

A husband is that special man
     That you yourself picked out
As being nice to be around
     And nice to think about.

He is just the one
     Who has that special way
Of being dear and sweet,
     The one who makes
Your life worthwhile,
     Your happiness complete.

A husband is the one who
     Makes you feel so proud
And glad to be his wife,
For he and his love for you
Will ever and always be
     Your greatest joy in life.

A Dozen Christmas Roses

One rose for the times we’ve shared and the memories we’ve made
One rose for being someone I can trust
One rose for accepting me as I am
One rose for forgiving me the mistakes I’ve made
One rose for taking the time to listen even when you don’t understand or agree
One rose for being there when I need you
One rose for letting me be there when you need someone
One rose for the hopes and dreams and feelings you share
One rose for your actions that speak louder than words
One rose for knowing when to speak and when to offer silence
One rose for your smile that brings joy into my world
And one rose for being one of life’s most beautiful gifts
Twelve roses because you are important to me and I love you.

Christmas roses are scientifically named Helleborus niger. Despite the similarity in name to domestic garden roses, they are a different species. Although they can be visually appealing, some varieties of Christmas roses should not be touched or ingested because they are poisonous to humans and animals, including pets, livestock, and wild animals.

Twelve Rules for a Happy Marriage

1. Never both be angry at once.
2. Never yell at each other unless the house is on fire.
3. Yield to the wishes of the other as an exercise in self-discipline if you can’t think of a better reason.
4. If you have a choice between making yourself or your mate look good, choose your mate.
5. If you feel you must criticize, do so lovingly.
6. Never bring up a mistake of the past. Your silence will be greatly appreciated.
7. Neglect the whole world rather than each other.
8. Never let the day end without saying at least one complimentary thing to your life’s partner.
9. Never meet without an affectionate greeting.
10. When you’ve said or done something hurtful, acknowledge it and ask for forgiveness.
11. Remember, it takes two to get an argument going. Invariably the one who is wrong is the one who will be doing most of the talking.
12. Never go to bed mad.

Wedded Love

There is no truer bliss on Earth,
     Than wedded love;
It hath its nourishment and birth
     From Him above!
Who hath to mortals kindly given
A foretaste of the joys of Heaven!

If

If I can hold a flower
     and watch its petals fade,
If I can touch the well-worn earth
     on which my children played,
If I can hold one moment
of the times you’ve made me smile,
Then I can take the bad times,
for you’ve made them all worthwhile.

Wedding Dreams

I dreamed of a wedding
     of elaborate elegance,
A church filled
     with family and friends.
I asked him what kind
of a wedding he wished for,
He said one
that would make me his wife.

Being in Love for the Rest of Your Life

Marriage Means Being in Love for the Rest of Your Life

Marriage is love walking hand in hand together. It’s laughing with each other about silly little things, and learning to discuss big things with care and tenderness. In marriage, love is trusting each other when you’re apart. It’s getting over disappointments and hurts, knowing that these are present in all relationships. It is the realization that there is no one else in this world that you’d rather be with than the one you’re married to. It’s thinking of new things to do together; it’s growing old together.

Marriage is being in love for the rest of your life.
