Oysters have an elegant solution to a problem. When a grain of sand gets inside their shells, they respond by coating the irritant in a layer of the material that lines their shells, commonly referred to as ‘mother-of-pearl.’ After repeated coatings, the result is a shiny round object called a pearl. The problem is an irritant such as a grain of sand, and the solution is a pearl. Can oysters teach us how to solve problems?
